The Igbomina National Students’ Union (INSU), University of Ilorin Chapter, has honoured the institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Chief Abdulganiyu Kunle Akogun, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the union’s growth and the development of the Igbomina nation.
The recognition was conferred during the union’s 25th Anniversary and Igbomina Day Celebration held on Saturday at the University Auditorium, University of Ilorin.
Chief Akogun, who is also the traditional Akogun of Oke-Ode Land, received the award for what the union described as his “invaluable contributions to the progress of INSU in particular and Igbomina at large.”
Speaking with journalists shortly after receiving the honour, Chief Akogun expressed appreciation to the union for the recognition, describing it as one of the most memorable moments of his life.
“I receive this honour with a deep sense of humility and gratitude. INSU-Unilorin has, for 25 years, remained a home of excellence, discipline and service for Igbomina sons and daughters. To be recognised by the very students whose future we are helping to shape is one of the proudest moments of my life,” he said.
He dedicated the award to past and present leaders of the union, acknowledging their efforts in building a strong and enduring organisation.
“I dedicate this honour to all past and present leaders of INSU whose commitment and sacrifices laid the foundation for the achievements we are celebrating today,” he added.
Chief Akogun urged members of the union to pursue academic excellence while cultivating integrity, leadership and a spirit of service to society.
“My advice to you, the leaders of tomorrow, is simple: let scholarship be matched with character. Excel academically, but also invest in integrity, community service and unity. While the university will award you a degree, INSU should instill in you a sense of identity, responsibility and commitment to your people.
“Use this platform to mentor one another, advocate for the interests of your community with knowledge and facts, and uphold the values and reputation of the Igbomina nation wherever you find yourselves,” he said.
The university spokesman also called for greater unity among Igbomina communities, stressing that collective action was essential to achieving sustainable development.
“The strength of the Igbomina people lies in our unity. As we celebrate this milestone and commemorate Igbomina Day, we must move beyond our individual town interests and embrace a shared vision centred on education, enterprise and community development.
“Our youths remain our greatest asset. If we continue to support our students, invest in our communities and work together, the next 25 years will surpass everything we have achieved so far. Igbomina will rise, and it will rise together,” he said.
The colourful anniversary celebration attracted prominent sons and daughters of Igbomina land, including the National President of Omo Ibile Igbomina, Sir Bisi Fakayode, traditional rulers and other distinguished guests.
The event featured cultural performances, presentation of awards and reflections on the achievements of INSU-Unilorin over the past 25 years in promoting unity, leadership and academic excellence among students of Igbomina extraction.
