A medical group, Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF, in Nigeria has partnered with Sokoto State Government in the area of sensitization and media awareness campaign on vaccination following challenges faced in making people in some communities accept administration of vaccines.
The group said this resistance can stem from misinformation, distrust in healthcare providers, and cultural beliefs, and said addressing these issues often involves community engagement, education, and collaboration with local leaders to build trust and increase vaccine uptake.
Leader of the group, Ghani Abdullahi, added that this partnership aims to leverage media outreach and community engagement to effectively communicate the benefits of vaccination to the six targeted local government areas (Sokoto North, Sokoto South, Wamakko, Kware, Bodinga and Dange-shuni) of the state.
According to him, MSF and the State Ministry of Information Sokoto with the goal to educate the public on the importance of vaccinations, address any misconceptions and promote vaccine uptake to improve public health in the region.
“Yes, MSF recognizes that community rejection of vaccines can be effectively addressed through targeted sensitization and awareness campaigns.
“Therefore, collaborating with local media, such as radio, is a crucial strategy for reaching a wide audience and providing accurate information about vaccines.
“This partnership with the Ministry of Information is vital, as it helps ensure that messaging is consistent, culturally relevant, and reaches the communities most in need. By leveraging these channels, MSF aims to foster trust and promote behavioral change, ultimately improving vaccine acceptance and public health”.
The follow-up meeting attended by some Directors, Deputy-Directors (from Departments of Information, Mobilization & Orientation and New Media) in the Ministry was chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ibrahim Muhammad.
