Benue Assembly gets new Speaker, one hour after Dajo’s resignation

By Austin Angwe, Makurdi

The Benue State House of Assembly, Sunday, during an emergency plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Lami Danladi elected, Berger Alfred, representing Makurdi South state constituency as new speaker.

This development happened barely after one hour when the immediate past speaker, Aondona Dajo tendered his resignation.

Dajo in the letter stated that he resigned his position in good faith and in the best interest of the state, expressing appreciation to his colleagues for the opportunity they gave him to be the first among his equals.

He pledged to remain committed to his duties as a legislator and representative of his people of Gboko West state constituency.

Some Benue people who spoke with our correspondent expressed worry why the new speaker who was suspended by the house for attempting to cause chaos will emerge as speaker.

It could be recalled that Governor Hyacinth Alia in a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula last week denied allegations of plotting to remove the embattled speaker.
