Following the executive order issued on January 12, 2024, which prohibits indiscriminate loading and offloading by commercial vehicles within the Umuahia metropolis, Honorable High-Chief Victor Ikeji (Kpakpando Gburugburu), the Mayor of Umuahia North LGA, took the lead in enforcing compliance with the directive.
Mayor Ikeji, along with his enforcement team, embarked on an early morning operation, commencing at 7:00am on Monday to ensure adherence to the ban.
The Mayor actively visited various roads and motor parks within the city, striving to prevent commercial vehicles and traders from causing unnecessary gridlocks on the roads.
During interactions with traders and motorists, Mayor Ikeji conveyed the government’s support for their business endeavours, emphasizing that growth would be facilitated.
However, he stressed that conducting business must be carried out in an organized manner without disrupting the flow of traffic.
Expressing disapproval of traders displaying their wares in the middle of the road and motorists parking vehicles at the center of thoroughfares, Mayor Ikeji announced the formation of a dedicated team to tackle road obstruction and tout activities.
He underscored that those found violating the order would face consequences, including vehicle impoundment or confiscation of goods.
Mayor Ikeji asserted that Umuahia, as a capital city, should allow its residents to navigate high streets without encountering avoidable traffic jams and obstructions.
He concluded by stating that this enforcement initiative would become a regular and unannounced occurrence.
