Four arrested for illegal tax collection in Benue

Acting executive chairman, Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, Emmanuel Agema, has disclosed that his men, officers of the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Services, NHFSS, Benue State command in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force have arrested four illegal tax collectors in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Agema who disclosed this in a statement signed by his media assistant, Jacinta Bernard, said the four suspects were apprehended while extorting money from petty traders at the Lafia park located at North Bank area of Makurdi, adding that the tax criminals claimed to have belonged to Makurdi Local Government Area market committee constituted to collect revenue in parks and markets.

The BIRS boss equally stated that to ensure zero-tolerance to criminal tendencies of staff and to fight extortion, corruption and illegal tax collection with the view to fish out bad elements, the claims of the suspects were immediately verified through a phone call to the caretaker chairman of Makurdi Local Government Area, James Dwem, who denied their claims.

Agema, in the statement, said the Chairman insisted that the suspects were on their own as he was not aware of such operations in the local government area.

The Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, boss who restated Governor Hyacinth Alia’s resolve not to pamper criminals in the state or have any business with them, urged the police to commence full investigation into the matter.

He added that the suspects would be made to face the full wrath of the law, assuring that there would be no compromise from any quarter.
