The Chairman, Benue State Football Association, BSFA, Paul Edeh, has commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for reviving the Governor’s Cup competition after eight-year comatose.
Edeh described the decision as a testament to the governor’s passion and belief in the power of sports to inspire and transform lives.
Speaking during a press conference in Makurdi, Edeh announced that the competition would feature teams from all 23 local government areas of the state, with each team paying a registration fee of N500,000.
He also announced that the tournament would kick off on October 1, subject to the governor’s approval, and would feature a zonal conference in four zones, culminating in the super-8.
The BSFA Chairman also revealed that the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, President, Ibrahim Gusau, would grace the opening and closing ceremonies and donate a trophy for the competition.
He also announced that the winners would receive N10m, N6m, and N4m for first, second, and third positions, respectively, with consolation prizes for outstanding performances.
The BSFA chairman highlighted the benefits of the tournament, including the discovery of local talents, fostering peace and unity, stimulating the local economy, and promoting community engagement and social growth.
He commended Governor Alia for his dedication to sports development and youth empowerment as well as commissioner for youth, sports and creativity and his team for their tireless efforts in ensuring that the governor’s cup tournament is brought back to life.
