NAS commemorates World Mental Health Day, urges Nigerians to prioritize wellbeing

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), also known as the Pyrates’ Confraternity, Galleon Bay Deck, has joined the global commemoration of the 2025 World Mental Health Day with a call for increased awareness and care for mental wellbeing.

The event, held in collaboration with Top Fit Gym and Fitness, emphasized the importance of mental health in everyday life and the need for individuals to take proactive steps in maintaining psychological balance.

Speaking at the event, the First Mate of Galleon Bay Deck, Mr. Emmanuel Aplife, urged members of the association and the general public to prioritize their mental health.

“We must take our mental health seriously. Mental wellbeing is as important as physical fitness. Many people go through silent struggles that affect their productivity, relationships, and quality of life,” Aplife said.

Also speaking, Dr. Gideon Chugbe of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital noted that the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has seen a noticeable increase in mental health challenges globally and in Nigeria.

According to him data has shown a significant rise in mental health cases since the pandemic, adding that “statistics indicate that at least 25 percent of individuals will experience a mental health challenge at some point in their lifetime.”

Dr. Chugbe identified some common causes of mental health issues to include relationship breakups among young people, marital or family conflicts, toxic work environments, prolonged illness, poor academic performance among children, loneliness among the elderly, and financial instability.

On solutions, Dr. Chugbe emphasized the need for emotional support systems, improved financial stability, and the development of more mental health professionals, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
