Strengthening local governments service for maximum performance, no doubt a collective responsibility, but even at that, a fearless, selfless and dedicated leader is inevitable to spearhead the total overhaul of the system to get the expected results.
A near-dead Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission recently breath back life when Garba Ashiru came on board, armed with rescue mission, hit the ground running.
The Commission, before now, wore a forlorn look nothing seems to be happening to the extent that workers in the 21 local governments in Kebbi state gave up hope on promotions, capacity building and retraining of staff to meet the global trends.
His first assignment was to clear backlog of staff promotions of no fewer than 3,000 whose files have been lying for many years without attention, with the promotion staffers of local governments had received a boost for better service at their various localities.
To further improve productivity in the local government service, the LGSC boss paid a whopping sum of money to staffers undergoing training in disciplines at different higher institutions in the country, the intent being to improve manpower and capacity for efficient service delivery in the local governments administrations.
As part of efforts to give back to the society the Commission has a social security funds designed to assist orphans and vulnerable members of the public in line with the policy thrust of Kauran Gwandu led government of giving lifeline to the needy which Ashiru has been implementing with a view to bringing succour to people living in poverty.
The LGSC boss in a bid to ensure discipline and accountability activated a disciplinary section to entertain and try cases of unwholesome behaviour among staff of the Commission and traditional rulers who violate laws of the state even as he maintains stable, harmonious and respectful relationships with staff and traditional heads under the Commission to ensure grassroots developments.
He brings all his staff closer to collectively work for the success of Nasir Idris in the area of local councils developments across the state which seeks to bring rural dwellers closer to the government for dividends of democracy at the local level, these and many pipeline programmes make him a rare reformer at a time the entire country needs capable hands to turn around human potentials.
